Sandy Coast was a Dutch beat group from Voorburg mainly in the late sixties and early seventies was popular. Her best-known hits were True love that’s a miracle from 1971 and The eyes of Jenny from 1981. The lead singer of the group was Hans Vermeulen.

Biography

1961. Originally called the Sandy Coast Skiffle Group, but when the skiffle craze has blown over the band changes its name into Sandy Coast Rockers.
1963. Sandy Coast wins a talent show, which results in a record deal.
1964 – 1966. The band’s debut single Being In Love is released.
1967 – 1968. The band’s success is on the increase and the singles A Girl Like You and And Her Name Is… become sizable hits.
1969 – 1970. The single Capital Punishment becomes a major hit for the band. They sign a deal with the UK’s Page One label, hoping for an international breakthrough. Although the LP Shipwreck is well received, its sales are disappointing. The single North Canadian Paradise does not reach the charts.
1971. Sandy Coast signs a record deal with Polydor and the singles True Love That’s A Wonder and Just A Friend rocket to the top of the charts. The LP Sandy Coast is high in the album charts.
1972. Sandy Coast keeps up their success with Just Two Little Creatures and Summertrain.
1973. The album Stonewall is welcomed coolly upon its release and the single Blackboard Jungle does not enter the charts.
1974. The band splits up and Jan and Hans Vermeulen form Rainbow Train.
1980. Sandy Coast performs at the Beatnight in The Hague and decides to reform.
1981. The Eyes Of Jenny marks their return as hit providers.
1982. The band reforms regularly to perform at Back To The Sixties-festivals.
1988. The band cuts Rendez-vous, Only The Best and tours the country on a regular basis until Hans Vermeulen emigrates to Thailand in 1995.

Unbeknownst to the public, Freddie Mercury had been diagnosed with the AIDS virus in the late ’80s. Although his health weakened by the ’90s, Mercury insisted that the band work on music until the very end; their final album turned out to be 1991’s Innuendo. Although it didn’t receive the same critical praise as its predecessor, 1989’s The Miracle, it was another strong album and global hit (again going gold in the U.S.). With hindsight, the song’s lyrics are blatantly autobiographical from Mercury’s standpoint, such as the reflective “These Are the Days of Our Lives” and the bold “The Show Must Go On.” Also included are a pair of tracks that deal with mankind’s inability to live harmoniously (the superb epic title track and “All God’s People”) and a humorous tribute to Mercury’s beloved pet felines (“Delilah”). Queen’s heavier side is represented by both the rock radio hit “Headlong” and “The Hitman,” while “I’m Going Slightly Mad,” “I Can’t Live With You,” and “Don’t Try So Hard” show the band’s pop sensibilities in full force, and on “Bijou,” Brian May gets to show off his guitar chops. Innuendo was a fitting way to end one of rock’s most successful careers.

This is the second recording of Machaut’s music by the all-male Orlando Consort (countertenor on top), and their way with Machaut is excellent. They have a nice, light tone in the secular pieces that contrasts with the more severe Gothic Voices, and they convey the weighty, ceremonial quality of the big motets. Machaut goes far enough back that nobody can be sure of how it sounded (and the graphics for this all-vocal album show a painting including instruments), but if you like the unaccompanied approach, this will do as well as anything for putting the basic sound of Machaut in your head. And “basic,” in the best way, describes this album in another respect as well: the booklet notes by Anne Stone (given in English and French) give the most complete, and more importantly most enthusiastic, introduction one could ask for in a few pages to Machaut’s stylistic world. While so many recordings and writings treat the multiple texts in Machaut, for example, as a medieval eccentricity and an annoyance, Stone shows how the texts, even sacred and secular ones together, comment on and reinforce each other, and are reinforced by the music. The album includes examples of most of the major Machaut genres: motet, rondeau, ballade, and virelai, missing only the monophonic lai (whose world is indeed hard to put across in a few pieces). For a library-cornerstone Machaut album, you would be hard pressed to do better than this.

This second Machaut recording by The Orlando Consort for Hyperion seems to me a return to their best form. Much of the time the musical and textual argument puts the spotlight on the consort’s younger members, the countertenor Matthew Venner and the higher tenor Mark Dobel (the lower parts being sung but not texted). Their agility and Venner’s clear, well-modulated timbre and admirable control of phrasing play no small part in The Orlandos’ rejuvenation: they appear to good effect in the consecutive tracks Quant en moy and S’Amours ne fait. The texts, which in Machaut’s case are particularly worth absorbing, are also more intelligible here than has sometimes been the case.

The programme is nicely varied in mood and scoring, ranging from four-voice ballades and motets to a single-voice virelai, and every combination in between. It also includes a higher proportion of pieces already present in the discography than the previous instalment (11/13), and in these pieces The Orlandos either find something new to say or say it particularly well (try Rose, lis, for example, or the melancholy Dame, je suis cils, which Gothic Voices had made their own, recording it not once but twice). Of those pieces new to the discography I’d single out the humorous hunter’s canon Se je chant mains by Machaut’s contemporary, Denis Le Grant, whose calls and barks are nicely suggested without the music descending into slapstick. A thoughtful essay by Anne Stone makes audible sense of the many connections between the pieces on this valuable, impressive recording.

After a year off the concert platform, Xiayin Wang, a specialist in the romantic repertoire, presents a new recording of two relatively little-played piano concertos: No. 2 by Tchaikovsky, in its much lesser- known yet extremely virtuosic original version, and Khachaturian’s. The disc also marks the 125th anniversary of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, here conducted by its Music Director, Peter Oundjian. Involving the same forces as Wang’s earlier recording of American concertos (Editor’s Choice in the magazine Pianist), the album follows a performance in Edinburgh’s Usher Hall, described by The Scotsman as ‘breathtakingly athletic’. Composed more than fifty years apart, these pieces have perhaps only one thing in common, namely an opening grandiosity or grandeur. Yet, while Tchaikovsky in 1879, in his heyday, undercut imperial splendour with a wealth of contrasting material that pointed the way ahead to more experimental, post- imperial concertos such as Prokofiev’s Second, Khachaturian’s folk generalisations, vaguely Armenian or Georgian, remain the consistent thumbprints of a rather heavier style.

This might be the best debut album ever delivered by an American blues band, a bold, powerful, hard-edged, soulful essay in electric blues with a native Southern ambience. Some lingering elements of the psychedelic era then drawing to a close can be found in “Dreams,” along with the template for the group’s on-stage workouts with “Whipping Post,” and a solid cover of Muddy Waters’ “Trouble No More.” There isn’t a bad song here, and only the fact that the group did even better the next time out keeps this from getting the highest possible rating.

Soil Festivities dates from 1984, before Vangelis was working with orchestras. Some would say that it was before he “sold out” or when he was a “real musician,” but those opinions are totally subjective. It is certain that this is a different kind of work. The album features five movements, each a self-contained soundscape. Vangelis surrounds a subtle drone with heavy sequences and dense atmospheres. He uses a symphonic synth to create pastoral textures. This is a very accessible album. It will appeal to fans of Constance Demby, Wendy Carlos, Victor Cerullo, and Yanni.

Angela Hewitt’s notes for this important new album describe a teenager’s moment of revelation when she first came to appreciate the epic masterpiece that is the Liszt Piano Sonata. Here we have a heart-felt recording where this palpable sense of wonder is manifest alongside Hewitt’s enthralling technical facility at the keyboard. The programme is completed by the second half of Liszt’s dazzling second Année de pèlerinage collection: the three Petrarch Sonnets and the noble Dante Sonata, the latter composed as a fund-raiser for the Bonn Beethoven monument in 1839.

Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt, mostly known as a Bach specialist, would seem an unlikely choice for Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor, and indeed she has said that she herself disliked the piece until introduced to it by a teacher. Certainly Hewitt’s reading of the work is unusual, and for those with a vision of the Liszt sonata involving lots of pounding on the keyboard or even just a grand statement of Romantic pianism, it’s probably best to look elsewhere. On the other hand, Hewitt’s reading is both coherent and competent, and it can boast abundant historical justification to boot. First of all, Liszt’s pianos of 1853, although a long way advanced from Beethoven’s, weren’t capable of anything like the volume produced on grand pianos in concert halls these days; Hewitt’s more restrained playing is probably closer to the historical norm. More important, Beethoven is the point of reference for Hewitt’s performance in a way that earlier recordings of the Piano Sonata in B minor have not been. It’s no accident that for her Liszt recording, Hewitt chooses the piano sonata and the “Fantasia quasi Sonata” Après une lecture du Dante as the two bookends, with the three Petrarch Sonnets as an entr’acte. The Piano Sonata in B minor is marked by close attention to line and motive rather than volume and speed, and the little bits of the original theme as they go by in the slow sections and the demonic fugues are especially clearly delineated. The sonata is divided into five separate tracks, emphasizing the traditional multi-movement sonata structure that’s very much present in the work, and Hewitt’s phrasing supports this aspect. Hyperion’s recording in the Jesus-Christus-Kirche of Berlin, an institution whose doors Liszt would hardly have darkened at this point, is undistinguished, but this is a recording that will be prized for originality by those who love Liszt’s only sonata.

Writing in her personal and engaging notes, Angela Hewitt tells us that Liszt’s B minor Sonata is ‘quite simply one of the greatest works ever written for the piano by any composer’ and, continuing, that it is music that makes you realise ‘that our everyday worries are so trivial and unimportant’. And so it is in her superbly serious performance, one that eschews all personal vanity, all preening mannerism and flamboyance but which, with strength in abundance, locates the still centre at the heart of Liszt’s raging heroics. What enviable poise and expressive beauty to launch the central Andante, what muffled and sustained opening octaves (in this she follows both her own inclination and also Brendel’s rather than Horowitz’s sharp cut-off), what concentrated focus rather than a breathless hurtle through the final section’s fugue. Her coda, too, breaths ‘glassy sighs and threats’; and if there is one concession to display (a bass reinforcement), well, why not? Despite a catalogue brimming over with greatness – Horowitz (his early 1938 recording), Arrau, Brendel, Gilels, Argerich, Richter, et al – Hewitt holds her own to such an extent that she makes you forget all about odious comparisons and listen instead to one of the great milestones in all music.

If her Petrarch Sonnets and Dante Fantasia (Liszt’s ‘other’ sonata) don’t quite reach this exalted level, they are nonetheless front-rank performances. There is a richly inclusive sense in the Sonnets of ardour and reflection (‘I fear, yet hope, I burn, yet am turned to ice’ and ‘I beheld on earth angelic grace’). Hewitt’s Dante Sonata is a vibrant and intensely musical alternative to Volodos’s stunning virtuoso recreation (Sony Classical, 6/10). Hyperion’s sound and presentation are as immaculate as ever and there is ample breathing space between each item. This is possibly the very finest of Angela Hewitt’s many recordings.

This is a rather obscure band, at least outside of their part of the world. They were formed at the end of 1972, while in August of 1973 they started recording their debut. The eponymous release was published a year later, while Ave Rock were touring in Argentina. Influenced by the likes of Deep Purple and pushing their skills to the limit, Ave Rock presented a powerful album full of time changes and alternating tempos with a touch of psych and symhonic rock. The work on Hammond organ recalls heavily early-70’s Deep Purple’s, while the sound of the guitar is very psychedelic. Their style easily turns from dynamic rhythms to sensitive organ-based themes and from bluesy-rock parts to complicated Gentle Giant-like progressive rock. Vocals are sporadic, this is mostly an instrumental album filled with a thousand music colors and should please every fan of organ-based classic progressive rock.
“Espacios” is the second and presumably final album from Ave Rock. This one moves closer to the symphonic mold than the band’s first album did, but really the strength of the band’s variety earns them an unqualified Art Rock label.
